The North Central Florida Blues Society is excited to bring Gainesville a triple header of soulful Blues on September 23 for Bridget Kelly’s birthday!
Out of Memphis comes the Ghost Town Blues Band. With the warning that they are “not your grandpa’s blues band”, they offer an understanding of what makes Blues such a loved style of music, but with a unique contemporary approach. Horns, harmonies and homegrown instruments combined with an energetic and roots rich festival set makes Ghost Town Blues Band one of the “must see live bands on the festival circuit today.” Both Andrew McNeill behind the drums and Matt Karner on the bass guitar are a punishing rhythm section behind multi-instrumentalist/frontman Matt Isbell with raunchy cigar box guitar licks and raspy “Dr. John-like, whiskey and gravel-soaked vocals.” With the addition of Trombonist Suavo Jones, Cedric Taylor on B3 and Taylor Orr on lead guitar, the grooves go from funky to “funk-nasty” as the band gains more notoriety in the blues festival and jam circuit. They were the 2014 International Blues Challenge Runner-up.
“GTBB shows what can happen when the past is distilled through young sensibilities, voices, and instruments. This is 21st century blues at its best.” -Living Blues Magazine
With an extensive background in gospel and a lifelong passion for soul music, the Betty Fox Band has burst onto the Florida music scene in a whirlwind of controlled yet unabashed passion and has taken the hearts of anyone wise enough to lend her their ear. At age 27, this fiery songstress has her own musical project with quite a few heart wrenching, lyrically driven and musically sound original tracks that beg the question “What kind of life must this old soul have lived?” To support her talent, she has carefully selected musical heavyweights Josh Nelms on guitar, Matt Walker on bass, and Sam Farmer on drums to set herself up for nothing less than well deserved success. Fox was a 2015 International Blues Challenge finalist.
Inspired by classic & electric blues, the Bridget Kelly Band has placed their unique stamp on the blues genre, with high-energy live performances and a hybrid sound that mixes Texas and Memphis Blues with various Southern Blues traditions. The powerful and sultry vocals of singer Bridget Kelly and the incendiary lead guitar work of Tim Fik forge a signature hybrid sound that combines classic urban blues with riff-driven rockin’ blues guitar; held together by a dynamic rhythm section. With now five consecutive albums making the Root Music Report charts, the two-time IBC semifinalists are gaining serious media attention. See why a writer said “Here is a band to experience, one who has found a unique sound and who knows how to tell their own stories. “
